WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE? |
Year of release 1998 |
In the United Kingdom, Chris Tarrant
questions contestants with a serious face, making an exciting and popular
quiz show that has now aired for over five years. The ITV show is the most
the popular quiz show in British history. The ABC version in the USA is hosted by Meredith Vieira. It has hit ratings highs, scoring above popular television series like CSI and Law and Order during 2001. It has since seen a downfall in popularity, but has continued to beat The Weakest Link which has attracted a similar television viewing market. The legendary and somewhat eccentric AFL football commentator Eddie McGuire is let loose on the Nine Network’s Australian edition of the programme. He is described in promotional descriptions distributed to the media as the tormentor-in-chief, and McGuire lives up to this description, questioning contestants with the suspense and wit. In a review I have previously I had pointed to the educational values and the surprise offered from the huge economic risks. Both are valid reasons for the shows success, which has screened in over 100 countries. By Michael Sergel. |
